Thai Massage Course: Chiang Mai vs Pattaya

Chiang Mai or Pattaya for a Thai massage course? An honest comparison of the two cities for training, cost of living, getting there, and finding work after you qualify.

Thai Massage Course: Chiang Mai vs Pattaya

Short answer

Chiang Mai has the largest cluster of long-established massage schools for international students and a slower, cooler setting. Pattaya has far fewer English-friendly schools but one of Thailand's biggest spa and hotel job markets, and it is about two hours by road from Bangkok's main airport. If you want the traditional study-retreat experience, look at Chiang Mai; if you want to train where the jobs are, Pattaya is the stronger choice.

Search for a Thai massage course and most of what you find points north to Chiang Mai. That is not an accident. Chiang Mai has trained international students for decades, and those schools have a head start online.

But the right city depends on why you are training. This is an honest comparison.

Chiang Mai: the classic choice

  • Many schools for foreigners, with long track records
  • Cooler, slower, greener, which suits a study-retreat trip
  • A strong community of other international students
  • Fewer paying clients per school, so real-client practice can be limited

Pattaya: where the jobs are

  • A dense spa and hotel market in a small area, so graduates find work fast
  • Around two hours from Suvarnabhumi by road, no domestic flight needed
  • Fewer English-friendly schools, which often means smaller groups
  • Beach city living, which is either a plus or a distraction, depending on you

Questions to ask any school, in either city

  1. Who accredits the course, and is the certificate in English with hours listed?
  2. How many hours of hands-on practice do you get each day?
  3. What is included in the price: materials, exam, certificate?

Frequently asked questions

Is Chiang Mai or Pattaya better for learning Thai massage?
Both work. Chiang Mai is known for its many international schools and retreat feel. Pattaya is better if you want to practise on real clients and find a job quickly after the course.
How do I get to Pattaya from Bangkok airport?
By road it is roughly two hours from Suvarnabhumi. Our Pattaya campus is right beside the Nakhonchai Air coach terminal in Nong Prue, so you can arrive by bus and walk in.
Are courses more expensive in Chiang Mai?
Prices vary widely between schools in both cities, so compare what is included. Our Thai, oil and foot massage courses are 4,900 THB each in Pattaya and Bangkok.
Will my certificate be the same wherever I study?
Certificates differ by school, not by city. Ours is bilingual Thai–English and the curriculum is accredited by the Ministry of Education.
