What Licences Do You Need to Open a Massage Shop in Thailand?

Many people who train and then work for a while start thinking about opening their own shop.

It is a good ambition — but before signing a lease, know what paperwork is required. Plenty of people finish the fit-out before discovering they cannot legally open.

The three core requirements

1. Health establishment operating licence

Issued by the Department of Health Service Support via the Provincial Public Health Office.

What inspectors will look at:

• Separate, properly partitioned treatment areas with adequate space per bed
• Sufficient lighting and ventilation
• Hygienic toilets and hand-washing facilities
• Clean storage for linen, with used and clean items separated
• No features suggesting services other than health massage

2. A qualified operator

The shop must have a registered operator who has completed a spa or health massage operator course.

The operator can be the owner, or someone hired for the role — but the position must genuinely be filled and present.

3. Every therapist registered

All therapists must hold SorPorSor.14 registration, which means each has completed at least 150 accredited hours.

This is where new owners struggle most — they find a skilled therapist, but that person has no certificate, so they cannot be employed.

Five mistakes we see most often

1. Signing a lease before checking the premises can pass inspection — some buildings cannot be partitioned to standard, and the deposit is lost.

2. Pricing too low to win customers — low prices attract disloyal customers, raising prices later loses them all, and good therapists leave because their share is too small.

3. No booking system — nobody answers the phone, or the paper diary double-books. Customers are lost without the owner noticing.

4. Employing unregistered therapists — this puts the entire establishment licence at risk.

5. An owner who cannot massage — unable to judge applicants, unable to maintain standards, and unable to cover when the team is short.

Why owners should be able to massage

The law does not require it. But after more than a decade in this industry, we see clearly that owner-therapists survive longer.

An owner who can massage will:

• Interview properly — ask for a demonstration and know immediately what level they are seeing
• Train and standardise the team without depending on anyone else
• Step in and take bookings when the shop is full or staff are absent
• Explain to clients why a treatment is done a certain way, which is what sells packages
