Spa Massage Course in Thailand — Guide

Short answer

Most spas hire first for oil (aromatherapy) massage, and value therapists who can also do Thai and foot massage because those are the best-selling menu items. At Michael Thai Massage School the 150-hour aromatherapy oil massage course takes about 19 days and costs 4,900 THB, with a Ministry of Education accredited curriculum and a bilingual certificate, at campuses in Bangkok and Pattaya.

"Spa massage" is not one technique. It is the menu a spa sells, which in most places means oil massage, Thai massage, foot massage and facial treatments.

So the useful question is not only where to study. It is what the spa you want to work in actually sells, and what you need to be able to do on day one.

What different spas hire for

Type of spaCore menuWhat to train in
Hotel / resort spaAromatherapy oil massageOil 150 h, plus Thai massage
City day spaOil, Thai, footOil + foot
Spas abroad / cruise shipsOil massageOil 150 h at minimum

Oil massage appears almost everywhere. That is why most people aiming for spa work start there. See Thai vs oil massage for how the two differ.

How to choose a spa massage course

1. Accreditation and hours on the certificate

Spa managers and overseas employers ask to see certificates. Check who accredits the course, whether the hours are listed, and whether it is in English. More in massage certification for foreigners.

2. Hands-on time

Spa work depends on rhythm, pressure and smooth oil handling. You only get that from repetition. Ask how much of each day is practice.

3. Closeness to a spa job market

Our Pattaya campus sits in one of Thailand's densest spa and hotel markets. Our Bangkok campus is beside Si La Salle BTS. See Thai massage school in Pattaya.

The bottom line

Start from what the spa sells, which is usually oil massage, then pick an accredited course with plenty of hands-on time near where the jobs are.
